karina napier
Napier’s work is deeply personal, presenting intimate moments witnessed by others. Her emotional response to the other's experience results in a “self” portraiture: a depiction of her self-reflection mirrored and interweaving the dual experience.
This approach centers on a philosophy of interconnection called Ubuntu that she learned while living in West Africa: I am you because you are.
A self-taught artist, she studied at Parsons School of Design in New York City but didn’t pursue painting. However, at a young age, she’d aspired to become a painter, mimicking Monet with Crayola watercolors on her bedroom floor.
Between 2020 and 2022, she had space and time to paint. She found a pleasing outlet for the severe experience she couldn’t otherwise articulate and has continued this commitment.
With the support of her partner, a trained and professional artist, and between birthing her only biological child, helping to raise her stepchildren, and running her own business, she has created sporadic moments to paint and study other painters.
Napier was born in Hancock, New Hampshire. She currently resides with her family in Portland, Maine.
