mothering
About this work:
Protection, comfort, security.
The act of mothering, a rapturous experience the artist never anticipated, is also about selflessness and mindful moderation. The mother will struggle to provide as much as she rises. In this cyclical upheaval, the primary caregiver can make a choice: grant others the space to love and participate in the mothering or do it alone. The graceful decision can be vulnerable. Relinquishing her perceived control is a first step in letting go.
Guided by the philosophy of Ubuntu - “I am because we are” - these paintings aim to capture intimate yet familiar moments of mothering from different identities.
Once shared, a deeply personal experience is revealed as familiar or even common. As a result, an emotional connection is made between individuals who may otherwise appear to share little—the artist, the depicted, and the viewer. “I am because you are.”
