mothering

about this work

Protection, comfort, security.

The act of mothering, a surprising gift of rapture the artist never anticipated, is also an experience of selflessness and mindful moderation. A mother, the artist observes, may struggle as she caretakes as much as she rises. As that cycle of growth and upheaval evolves, the mother may grant herself and others the space to love and participate in the mothering. This decision of grace can be a vulnerable choice, relinquishing her perceived control with a deferential bow.

Guided by the philosophy of Ubuntu - I am because we are - these paintings aim to capture intimate yet familiar moments of mothering among different identities.

The depiction of a deeply personal experience can simultaneously be considered common, familiar, or shared, producing an emotional connection between the artist, the depicted, and the viewer - individuals who otherwise may collectively appear to share little. This emotional response aims to remind us that “I am because you are.”
